Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets
New research suggests that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these medications need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
